| page 2 of 7 The standard for “goodness” according to God is found in the 10 Commandments. Perhaps you have heard of the 10 Commandments, but do you think that you have kept them ? Perhaps you're saying to yourself “I've basically kept them. I mean... I haven't murdered anyone and I am nice to people.” Lets take a look at some of these Commandments. They are found in The Bible books of Exodus chapter 20 and Deuteronomy chapter 5 Commandment #9: Do not bear false testimony against your neighbour Have you ever told a lie to anyone ? You may say that telling the occasional lie means we are only human. Yes it may, but it still makes us a liar. Remember that Adolf Hitler was human. If you are saying to yourself “one lie doesn't make me a liar”, then ask yourself what you would call me if I lied to you? or how many murders does someone need to commit before they are called a murderer? If you have ever told a lie then this quite simply makes you a liar.
Commandment #8: Do not steal Have you ever stolen anything ? Take some time with this one. Yes, taking that item from the office, watching a pirated movie, cheating on your tax or that little thing you stole when you were young counts. Have you ever called in sick for work when you were not sick ? Not only are you lying when you do this but you are also stealing. If you availed yourself of anything that is not rightfully yours, irrespective of it's value, then you have broken this commandment and this would make you a thief.
Commandment #7: Do not commit adultery Have you ever committed adultery ? In the book of Matthew Chapter 5 verse 27 Jesus said, referring to the 10 Commandments, “... that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Wow, that's a tough standard ! but God is perfect in every way, he's a holy God, and it's comforting to know that he is not just interested in the exterior of our lives but that he is just as interested in the condition of our hearts too. If you've ever gazed upon a member of the opposite sex with lust for them then in your heart you have already joined the ranks of the unfaithful and in God's eyes you have become an adulterer.
Commandment #6: Do not commit murder Have you ever murdered anyone ? as in the case of adultery, The Bible says in the book of 1st John chapter 3 verse 15 “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer...” Also in Matthew chapter 5 verses 21 to 22 Jesus says that undue anger towards your brother makes you worthy of God's judgement and if you were to call someone a fool then you would be worthy of Hell. Ever teased or belittled someone? In Matthew 12:36 the Jesus said "But I tell you that men will have to give an account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken." In God's eyes if you have ever carried hatred for anyone in your heart then that makes you a murderer.
These are just 4 of the 10 Commandments Click here for all of the 10 Commandments from the Bible Gateway website. Please understand that I myself am not judging you, merely revealing what God has said in the Bible. If you feel conviction now it is because God gave you a conscience and this is a good thing. If you shut out your conscience it's like removing the batteries from a smoke alarm.
When we sin, we sin first against God even if it appears to us that we are merely sinning against others. This is because it is he who made them and loves them too and will hold us accountable on how we have treated those he has brought across our path in life. If you haven't been deceiving yourself but have been honest with yourself and with God then you could rightly say that you are a lying, thieving adulterer and murderer at heart. This is how God sees us; quite literally as his enemy. After all if someone had treated you and those you love in this way you would not consider them your friend but your enemy. The boxes contain Bible verses which are indicated by Book name then Chapter number followed by Verse number. e.g. John 3:16 indicates the Book of John, chapter 3, verse 16.
But isn't God a god of love, forgiveness and mercy ? Could it be that the very thing that many people think will be their deliverance on the Day of Judgement, that is God's goodness, will be the very thing that ensures an entirely different destiny than the one they hoped for ?
So... on Judgment Day when you face a God of Holiness and justice and he judges you according to these Commandments would you be found as innocent or guilty ?
